The University of Nottingham will be holding its first innovation showcase for aerospace technology and innovation in the Midlands.

Date: 26th October 2012
Time: 9.30 – 16.00
Venue: Aerospace Technology Centre, The University of Nottingham Innovation Park

The event highlights, through talks, demonstrations and tours, the breadth and scale of research, training and education conducted by the University’s Institute for Aerospace Technology along with its partners. The event is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.

The UK enjoys a reputation for excellence in aerospace technologies and is the number one aerospace sector by revenue in Europe, second only in the world to the United States. Currently it employs around 100,000 people directly and over 220,000 indirectly and involves around 2,600 companies across the UK.

A recent survey by the annual Midlands Aerospace Alliance (1) reveals that business turnover and employment continues to grow here in the Midlands, confirming that the strong position of the region’s industry in global growth markets, especially for large civil airliners in Asia, is flowing through to increased economic activity and jobs in the Midlands. Since 2005, Midlands aerospace business turnover has grown 60% and employment 30%, while the national economy has been flat. The aerospace sector creates 45,000 full-time-equivalent jobs in the region, shared across the larger companies and their supply chains.

During the event, the University will formally open the new Aerospace Technology Centre, a strategic infrastructure investment funded by the European Regional Development Fund, which will enhance research and knowledge transfer capabilities and allow Nottingham’s researchers to investigate a range of underpinning aerospace technologies.
